Celebrating 30 years of touring opera throughout Ireland this year, Opera Theatre Company (OTC) is the National Touring Opera Company of Ireland. Founded to create high quality opera productions that can be presented anywhere: from a community centre to an Opera House. The company has toured to more than 160 cities, towns, and villages across the island of Ireland since 1986, as well as touring to UK, France, Belgium, Italy, Czech Republic, USA and Australia.
OTC has had national and international success with baroque and early classical operas, as well as operas from the 20th century. In addition, the company has commissioned and performed nine new operas by Irish composers. OTC has also earned a strong reputation for high integrity site specific work.
For ten years from 2004 to 2014 OTC ran a Young Associate Artists’ Programme, which was the first programme on the island of Ireland for the professional development of young opera singers. The programme was fortunate to have the acclaimed Ann Murray as patron, and Brenda Hurley as vocal consultant. OTC OPERA HUB evolved from OTC YAAP and this new artist development programme, which commenced in 2015, offers a professional platform for young and established artists to initiate and create work in collaboration with OTC and other arts organisations.
OTC’s achievements would not be possible without The Arts Council and the support of Culture Ireland allows OTC represent Irish opera abroad. The company partners regularly with cultural organisations including: NI Opera, Rough Magic Theatre Company, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Wexford Opera House, the Goethe Institut, Italian Institute of Culture, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Irish Academy of Music, and Music for Galway, and has ongoing relationships with Fáilte Ireland, The Merrion Hotel, The Landmark Trust, Dublin City Council, the OPW and a network of venues nationwide.
